Reading Party in the Park! part two

Last night I had my 2nd Reading Party in the Park!

I had my first Reading Party in ze Park last August, which you can read about by clicking here.

This one was a long time coming, since the previous two dates it was raining!

Thanks a lot Mother Nature.

Here are some pics:

I was focused to make this one bigger, badder, better than before.

I texted people on the day of the event to remind them. Lots of people were nursing hangovers or actually sick from the annual Calgary Stampede that had just ended on Sunday.

But in reality about 15 people showed up, which is about the same as last year. I blame the constant postponing due to rain! It’s all good.

I provided cheese, fresh fruit – watermelon, nacho’s + salsa, guacamole, grapes, water…Twas a tasty affair if I may so.

I didn’t do this last time!

New friends were made. 15 is actually good number of people for an event like this.

Was great to see circles of friends meeting.

More importantly, I finally got some READING TIME in! I’ve been slacking on this routine this year.

Till next time,

Book-wormingly,

Nishant

get more play in your life

It’s a New Year.

New Way, New Life.

Now to back track a bit, in mid-December I threw an Ugly Xmas sweater party.

You must have heard of these before?

It’s where people wear ugly christmas sweaters and drink egg nog from a ski (shot ski). It’s a great way to meet up with old friends and make new ones as well.

This time I decided to create some hype for the party by making a series of promo videos. I posted these on a weekly basis on the FB event wall to build anticipation.

The result?

A quick survey at the party indicated that only half in attendance actually watched the videos! But those who did – loved it and more  importantly than anything else –  it was A LOT of FUN for ME to make.

Below is a 3 part series from the Making of the Shot Ski to  to the introduction of this fictional character called ” Shot Guy”.  I make an appearance in part two and three.

Yes it’s incredibly cheesy, but good fun. My film editing skillz need some upgrading in 2014.

We need more PLAY in our lives.

Some might say sarcastically, “great you made a bunch of silly videos.”

Yes I did.  It was a incredibly fun evening project.  Instead of  sitting at home watching movies off Netflix, why not make some of your own? Creating makes you feel better.

As we grow older we forget about doing things for fun sakes. There is an incredible article in Aeon magazine that talks about children today are suffering a severe deficit of play. Click here to read it.

It’s a quite thought provoking article as it states even children have LESS PLAY in there lives than 50 years ago. This is reducing our creativity, making us less healthier, and more anxious and stressed.

I think if you dig deeper, what other parts of your life are you doing that are boring or just for money?  Can you make it more fun for yourself?

P.S. Check out this new book by Charlie Hoehn called Play It Away.  I read his previous ebook to this “Recession Proof Graduate” which I also recommend (in fact I wrote a blog post about it you can read here by clicking here). In Play It Away he talks about he switched from being over-stressed workaholic to someone who treats his work like play! It’s really fascinating read and fast too, so check out at your nearest amazon.com.

Reading party in a park!

Last night I had a little “reading party” in a nearby park.  Now I’ve held one before, but this time it was more fun because  it was outside and warm!  This doesn’t happen often in Calgary.

Anyways it went swimmingly!  It consisted of hanging out with friends, socializing for an hour, and then reading whatever book each person wanted to read.

Socializing  + Reading + Park = fun event.

Some tricks to get people to the party?

I gave everyone 2 week notice.  In addition to making a facebook event, I personally emailed/phoned most of the people.  A little personal touch goes a long way. It shows you actually want them to come out to this week day event!

Now some still flaked out, but the ones that did attend loved it.

Here are some pics:

People arrived around 7 pm.  Everyone introduced themselves, etc.

At 8 pm we all read for one hour.  I remember some people getting a little restless for it to turn 8 pm so they could finally get there READ on!

I didn’t have to act library cop at all either. Except towards the end  a couple walking by found it utterly hilarious that 10-12 people were ALL reading in a park and began giggling. LOL.  I immediately gave them the evil eye and  shhh’ed them!  They complied and left.

Anyways this is a simple, fun event you can also hold. I give credit to Nev at nevblog.com for spreading the reading party idea. I tweaked it a bit of course and  it went off well!

Note to self: Bring healthy snacks/drinks for everyone. Oops.

my water project

Happy 2013 amigos!

A couple of months ago I got an email from charity:water.  They’re a organization that provides clean drinking water to people in developing countries.

I decided this was a worthy enough charity to give to, simply because 100% of the funds you donate goes directly to people who lack access to water. A lot of apprehension some have with charities is that it’s wasted on operations, ie the horror stories of corrupt officials, etc. In the case of charity:water,  they have private donors who have already taken over the operating expenses.

Anyways, I kinda of forgot about my donation from about 2 years ago!  Until they emailed me recently ( and all the others who donated) with photo’s and details about the project completion.

They actually showed me proof of what they did.  Actual photographic evidence of a tiny village in Ethiopia with a new water well.  Here are some photo’s:

They actually delivered the results !This blew me away! I mean I’ve donated before, but I wasn’t too aware of what happened with it. It’s powerful marketing when you can show a client (me) the before and after. They also mentioned to me ”  the communities contributed their own labor to build their water projects and formed Water Committees to maintain them for years to come.”  Very cool.

Which leads me to ask, have you ever gave funds to a worthwhile cause? I mean it’s easy to blow it on clubs, clothes, other entertainment all the time. Not saying become a Mother Teresa.  But also don’t wait to help humanity. You don’t have to wait till yer 50 to make a bit of difference in the world. A little bit right now helps.

Everyone’s got their ways to get more done. If you don’t, you will go through your day aimlessly  and by the end of the evening wonder… where did all the time go? I know I’ve experienced days like that.

This is where TO DO lists come in. I’ve been experimenting with this and time tracking (inspired from Sebastian Marshall, his site is amazing).  You write 3 tasks that you want to complete.  Focus on them till completion.  My to-do list is a bit of an adaptation of this. I write 3 things that must be done – the night before – then snap a pic of it and make it my iphone background screen.

So whenever I look at my phone during the day ( a lot) I always reminded that I must get shit done.

Happy 2012.

ps: pushing the off button and the home button at the same time –  takes a screen shot.

everyone’s talking about this

This device you see here has been the starter of  many conversations and laughs at parties.

It’s a breath alcohol tester.  It gives you a rating on how hammered you are. I like to carry it with me at bars just to make sure no one drives home above the limit.  JK.

Okay actually because it’s just a lot of fun! Everyone gets curious to see what there rating is.  It becomes something to talk about.

It doesn’t have to be a nifty gadget either.

It’s when your buddy mentions at a party how godlike amazing Under Cover of Darkness (click to  have a  listen!!) by The Strokes sounds.

Or that favourite author or killer new Iphone app – it’s why two people start chatting and relating to one another.

You do it without thinking in conversation all the time.

So that’s also the warning: make a product that can incite conversation! That is the cornerstone of any marketing.

learn from ogilvy

I don’t care what job your in – you need sales skills.

Selling gets the bad label sometimes of manipulation, but it’s about articulation. A doctor is in sales as well. He has to get the patients to believe a certain pill will calm there fears about a certain illness. Sometimes a good doctors best advice would be not give the patient anything.  Talking as if it was your family member.  Why it’s worth paying for.

I recently came across this little video devoted to David Ogilvy. He gives ideas on everything. I’ve read Ogilvy on Advertising and going to pick up Confessions of Ad Man soon.

He’s a funny, down to earth kinda of guy . His writing is quite compelling and he talks in the same manner.  Here’s some principles by a great man.
